Kabul terror attack: At least 12 killed, several injured in suicide car bombing
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for a car bombing in Kabul that left at least 29 people dead, as it ratchets up an offensive across Afghanistan.
Afghan Army said on Tuesday that 143 insurgence, including nine commanders, have been killed and 17 others wounded during airstrikes in the northern Faryab province.
They underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice and urged all countries to cooperate actively with the Afghan government and all other relevant authorities in this regard, according to the statement.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said a suicide bomber named Ahmed killed "37 employees of the intelligence agency" in the attack. The Hazaras are one of Kabul's largest ethnic minorities and due to the morning's suicide attack, the demonstration was postponed by the authorities.
"We assume the car wanted to target Mr Mohaqeq's house but was stopped by guards", he said. Most of the casualties were police officers and some bystanders, he said.
The last year's attack on the Hazaras by Islamic State - which established a foothold in eastern Afghanistan in 2015 - gave the Afghan conflict a fresh sectarian twist. Another 41 people were injured in the attack, Associated Press said. "One of the things is that when you put artificial timelines on things, they seldom obtain", he said at the Aspen Security Forum on Sunday night.
On 31 May, a huge bombing in central Kabul killed more than 150 people, the deadliest militant attack in the country since US-led forces ousted the Taliban from power in 2001. Over 42 people were injured in the blast and there are fears the number of casualties could rise.
While such attacks have become common in Afghanistan, a recent United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) report suggests loss of civilian lives have been on the higher side in the first six months of this year. "Many shops in the locality had just opened", Mujahed added. There was also fighting reported in Baghlan, Badakhshan, Kunduz, Kandahar, Helmand, and Uruzgan provinces, according to officials.
