Chris Froome was once again our victor, taking his fourth career maillot jaune in just five years, writing his name firmly as one of the greats in the history of the race. "It's always been the plan to go on and do the Vuelta but I'll have to see how I shape up over the next 10 days and when I get back into training".
"The course was designed this year to reduce the margins that you could gain in time trials".
Froome has a 54-second lead over Colombian rider Rigoberto Uran and, barring a crash, he is virtually assured of winning a third straight title.
He is already targeting becoming only the second rider since Hinault in 1978 to win a double of the Tour and the Vuelta a Espana, which starts in less than four weeks.
"I'm speechless, it's amazing", Froome said after getting off his bike and hugging his wife Michelle and son Kellan. I wasn't quite at my best in the Dauphiné but I've never felt this good in the third week of a Grand Tour.
"What has been interesting is there have been no difficult questions coming Chris Froome's way this year, there have been no challenges like we've had in other years", he added.

Both Wiggins and Froome have been subject to scrutiny and asked questions about doping at times during their Tour wins.
While there was some excitement at the finish, there was precious little going on behind a day-long 20-man escape group with Froome's Team Sky colleague forming a white wedge at the front of the peloton to keep their leader out of trouble.
But the Tour is about much more than just those who take the honour of the jerseys on the final podium in Paris, with each day's action contributing to the beauty and story of each edition of the Tour.
The French began to see a glimmer of hope that a home Tour de France winner might be a realistic possibility in the near future, with Romain Bardet taking his second podium spot in two years, and Warren Barguil winning two stages and the King of the Mountains jersey.
Some might argue this is bordering on myopia but cutting oneself off from the world and compartmentalising surrounding issues is probably part of being a successful Tour rider.
Intermediate sprint wins were worth €1,500 while riders first to crest the climbs were also rewarded, although €800 for making it first to the top of a monster such as the 2,360m Col d'Izoard in the Alps hardly seems particularly generous.
