AZ: Self-Driving Uber Car Kills Arizona Pedestrian
21 Marcha 2018, 05:55 | Alonzo Saldana
Pedestrian killed by self-driving Uber car in Arizona, police say
Hours after the crash, Uber announced the suspension of all tests of its autonomous vehicles in Pittsburgh, Phoenix, San Francisco and Toronto.
The accident is believed to be the first fatality involving a pedestrian from a self-driving car crash. Currently, the state isn't tracking the number of companies testing driverless cars.
This fatal crash will likely raise questions about the safety of autonomous vehicles in real-time use as well as the regulations governing these types of vehicles.
California and Arizona have been particularly encouraging, hoping that companies developing autonomous technology in those states will create local jobs and facilities devoted to a promising new industry.
The driver, who was not controlling the vehicle at the time of the accident, was identified as Rafael Vasquez, 44. "The driver said it was like a flash, the person walked out in front of them", a Tempe police officer is quoted as saying.
"The pedestrian was outside of the crosswalk, so it was midblock", Elcock said.
Police in a Phoenix suburb says Herzberg had been walking outside of a crosswalk Sunday night when she was struck by the vehicle. In short, it's been hard to imagine that autonomous cars could be worse than human drivers. Nobody was injured in that crash, according to Tempe PD. "Ultimately the investigation will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review and any potential charges".
Federal investigators were headed to Tempe on Monday to investigate. Canada's transportation ministry in Ontario, where Uber conducts testing, also said it was reviewing the accident. "So I really don't mind it". We're fully cooperating with @TempePolice and local authorities as they investigate this incident.
Ducey's office expressed sympathy for Herzberg's family and said safety is the top priority. "It is critical that pedestrians and drivers are safeguarded". "When there's no sheriff in town, people get killed".
Companies like Waymo, General Motors, and Uber have been testing self-driving cars for years over millions of miles.
Mark Rosenker, a former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said yesterday the public should not overreact to the Uber incident.
Senator John Thune, a Republican who chairs the Commerce Committee, said the "tragedy underscores the need to adopt laws and policies tailored for self-driving vehicles".
Despite the fact that just last year he warned "it would not be long" before an autonomous car killed a pedestrian or cyclist, professor Toby Walsh at optimisation reserach group Data61 still believes they are the safest option for the future.
Police said Uber is assisting in the investigation.
Uber had hoped to launch an autonomous ride-sharing service in mid-2019, but that target may now be pushed back.
Concerns over the safety of autonomous vehicles flared after a July 2016 fatality involving a Tesla Inc automobile with a partially autonomous system that required human supervision.
