"There will be no commission of inquiry", he told Israel's public radio.

The video appears to show Abdul Fattah, dressed in black, running away from the border fence carrying a tyre.

Switzerland said it supported the call for an independent investigation, adding that the situation showed "the necessity for revitalising peace negotiations".

The Land Day tradition was spurred by the events of March 30, 1976, when Israeli forces fatally shot six Palestinian protesters. The ministry added that 1416 Palestinians were injured, 758 from live fire, 148 from rubber-tipped bullets, 422 from inhaling tear gas and 88 from other causes.

Minor clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians broke out in Hebron, and a protest was held in Nablus, both in the West Bank. When asked by reporters, a spokesman could not say how many live rounds the IDF fired on Friday or how many people were shot.

An estimated 30,000 Palestinian protesters gathered along the 40-mile fence dividing Gaza from the rest of the country on Friday, demanding that Palestinian refugees and their descendants be permitted the "right of return" to their ancestral home. Egypt also keeps its Gaza frontier largely shut.

At least 17 Palestinians had been killed and more than 1,400 had been injured as of Sunday.

"Israel is acting determinedly and decisively to protect its sovereignty and the security of its citizens", he said.

The family members of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces reacted in shock and anger a day after the region's deadliest clashes in four years.

More than 100 snipers were deployed to the border for the planned demonstrations, according to Israeli media. The ministry did not provide a breakdown.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews tweeted about the incident: "Alarming developments at Gaza border as Hamas once again using its civilians - inc children - as pawns".

Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said the protests were not a "Woodstock festival" and rejected calls for a probe into the killings.

"However, there are also reports that some protesters engaged in stone-throwing and violent behavior; some reportedly carrying weapons", Zerihoun said.

"As an occupying power, Israel bears responsibility for what happened in Gaza today, as a result of the Israeli violation of the Palestinian right to protest peacefully and the use of excessive force against them", said the spokesperson of Jordan government, Mohammad al-Momani.

Even though the protests were organized by independent Palestinian activists, the ruling Hamas and other political organizations supported the move and called for people to attend the peaceful demonstrations. "This is the price we have to pay to return to our lands", Alaa Abdelnabi said. The Israel military has warned that it will "expand" its response if violence continues.

The United States will open its new embassy in Jerusalem on May 14 to commemorate's "Israel's 70th anniversary".

Thousands of Palestinians had marched to the Gaza border at the start of a six-week protest, with the aim of asserting their right to return to towns and villages from which their families had fled, or were driven out, when the state of Israel was created.
