UN chief outraged by deadly terrorist attacks in Afghanistan

Double Kabul suicide bombing kills 25, including 9 reporters

AFP Chief Photographer Shah Marai killed in Afghanistan

Dozens of people were killed in a series of terrorist attacks in Afghanistan on Monday. Eight Romanian NATO soldiers were wounded in that bombing. Monday's attacks in Kabul and Kandahar are the latest in what is now almost daily violence.

Stanekzai said the first suicide bomber was on a motorbike, while the second targeted those scrambling to the scene to aid victims. "He showed his press card and stood among journalists before blowing himself up", Danish said. At least nine media persons were among the dead, who rushed to the site after the first bombing. Marai was forced to take pictures with a small camera hidden in a scarf wrapped around his hand. Last week, an unidentified gunmen shot a journalist in the southern city of Kandahar. "The independent media is a cornerstone of democracy", he said, adding that the United States was "committed to defeating" the Islamic State group, which claimed responsibility for the Kabul attack.

Survivors and witnesses recounted scenes of mayhem. This is not a local story; it's not just about local news coverage in Afghanistan. The Taliban had warned earlier that they considered journalists legitimate targets. That's when "a bomber disguised as a TV cameraman detonated a second bomb at the site", CNN reported. The presidential palace released a statement saying that attacks targeting innocent civilians, worshippers inside the mosques, national and democratic processes, reporters and freedom of speech all are war crimes.

Crucially, ISIS has its presence felt loud and clear on the Afghan turf.

"We also send our condolences to the families of other journalists killed in this terrible attack". An area police spokesman told VOA the attack targeted a foreign forces convoy. He began taking photos on the side, eventually working his way up to working as a photographer and eventually the position of head photographer. The broadcaster did not immediately give further details.

Prior to Monday's blasts, the deadliest attack on the media in recent years was in 2016, when seven employees of popular TV channel Tolo were killed in a Taliban suicide bombing. "I hate to see this", said Candace Rondeaux, a former Washington Post correspondent in Kabul who later worked as a strategic advisor to the U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction.

Mirwais said government should investigate his son's murder and prosecute those responsible. The insurgents ambushed the police vehicle and fired RPGs. After the death of Sardar Ahmad in 2014, the Kabul bureau has again been struck by tragedy. The Taliban have also, at different times, expressed a willingness to join a peace process for Afghanistan, something IS absolutely rejects.

In the absence of a holistic US strategy, Afghanistan risks becoming one large training ground and weapons testing site for the American armed forces.

Relatives, colleagues and friends put flowers on the grave of Shah Marai Faizi at the funeral.
