Trump says he won't let right to bear arms 'be under siege'

Trump in Dallas:'You know what causes nuclear war? Weakness'

US President Donald Trump sparked anger in France and Britain by suggesting looser gun laws could have helped prevent deadly attacks in Paris in 2015, and linking a wave of knife crime in London to a handgun ban.

The Second Amendment of the US Constitution states that the "right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed". According to some newspapers, 170,000 people have already registered an interest in taking part in a London demonstration organised by Owen Jones and the Stop Trump Coalition, with more expected to attend coordinated demos across the country.

Trump has thrown his support behind proposals to fix the federal background check system and allow teachers to carry guns on school property.

Owner Joe Groves told KTVT television station that no NRA member wants kids or police officers to get killed and that "people like me don't want to take their guns away either".

"Ninety-eight percent of mass public shootings have occurred in places guns are banned", he said.

The NRA praised Kyle Kashuv, a victim of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, in February, for advocating gun rights after the tragedy.

Philippe Duperron, president of the survivors' association, also issued a statement saying that those most directly impacted were "outraged". "It can instead facilitate the planning of this type of attack".

Let's bring in the voice of Liston Matthews of Clayton, N.C. He is an NRA member who was in the room for the president's speech this afternoon.

The group says it will be a celebration of survivors of gun violence.

MATTHEWS: No, my views have not changed at all. Whether his journey takes him to Balmoral or just to Turnberry (the latter being a safe bet given his love of golf and his business interests), he is likely to be met with the kind of backlash that makes comedian Janey Godley's one-woman "Trump is a C***" protest look like a peace delegation and insults such as "shitgibbon" and "cockwomble" sound like sweet nothings.

Trump also urged the crowd not to become "complacent" heading into the midterm elections as he sought to galvanize the base. "And as long as he's getting money from the NRA - who, in turn, is getting money from the gun manufactures - I wouldn't expect anything common sense any time soon from him".

The French government issued its strongest criticism of Trump since he took office, at a time when President Emmanuel Macron has been reinforcing bilateral ties following a state visit.

"We mourn with those who mourn and grieve with those who grieve", the vice president said.

It's the fourth year in a row Trump has addressed the gun rights organization, which was a strong backer of his 2016 campaign. He and his wife have eight children between them, ages 8 to 21, all of whom are familiar with guns.

KELLY: What did you come wanting to hear today from the president?

"You watch how well we do in '18, you watch", Trump said.

More shirts on display at the NRA-AM 2018 in Dallas. The interview with Griffiths was subsequently written up by the British tabloid the Daily Mail and the U.S. -based website Breitbart. Many people, she said, just don't know gun owners.

The restaurant, Ellen's, is located in downtown Dallas, where the NRA is holding its annual meeting this weekend.
